Howdy, my name is Karl Mohr and I was a staff member for Clear Lake for the May season of 2024. I worked as an Aquatic Instructor, which tied well to my goal of one day becoming a marine biologist. I’m an undergraduate student at Northern Michigan University with a double major in both Ecology and French. I had plenty of experience with tutoring material in school and college, as well as being a guide towards new information as a Resident Advisor and during scientific conferences, so teaching kids and teens some science was another new step for me.
As I said before, I worked the Aquatics program here at Clear Lake. I went through many portions of studying bodies of water, from hydrology of ground water or watersheds, environmental sciences with water pollution and ocean acidification, chemistry of our own lake, to aquatic ecology and biology by taking a look at macroinvertebrates. I feel blessed to have been able to present on so many topics I was passionate about and add spins to a couple activities, like having kids blow bubbles in a bucket of water to simulate acidification due to the increase of carbon dioxide. The best part, however, even with these large disciplines and concepts, was when students had their own personal eurekas and opened up to the science and the activity. I love spreading my passion for science, and I’m glad many of my students were able to leave a bit more passionately as well.
I met a lot of great people here and had an amazing family of staff. Even though I plan on heading far from the UP that I’ve lived in all my life to pursue future careers, this peninsula and Clear Lake will always be dear in my heart.
In his post-employment survey, Karl had this to say: Something I learned about myself is
“I learned that I genuinely love to teach.”
